Root intrusion at clay-tile joints. The dominant Irvington main-line obstruction. The 1880s-1930s vitrified clay tile has bell-and-spigot joints every 4 feet, and 100+ years of mature canopy means root tips have found most of them. Cable cuts the visible root mass, hydro jet flushes the residue downstream, camera verifies the clear. When the scope shows three or more intrusion points, we recommend the cut + jet + foaming herbicide protocol (covered in detail on our Irvington root removal page) to extend the cleared interval from months to 2-3 years.

Settled debris in low spots. A century of normal sewer flow deposits sand, grit, paper fragments, and other settled material at low points in the lateral — particularly where ground settlement has created a slight belly. Emulsified grease coating. Decades of kitchen FOG flowing through the lateral leaves an emulsified grease coating on the pipe wall that narrows effective diameter. Cabling pushes through it but doesn't clean it; jetting strips the wall. After a thorough jetting, the lateral diameter returns to original spec and the next clog interval extends significantly.

When cleaning alone isn't enough. If the camera scope shows structural failure — collapsed sections, severe ovalization, full breaks, or three+ intrusion points along the affected span — cleaning is a stopgap, not a fix. We'll restore service with the cable + jet, then quote the repair options (CIPP lining, pipe bursting, or spot excavation) in writing. The $300-$550 cleaning fee is credited toward any follow-up structural repair within 90 days.
