Meridian-Kessler's stately Tudor, Colonial Revival, and Arts & Crafts homes were built between 1910 and 1940 along Meridian Street, Pennsylvania Street, and the cross streets up to Kessler Boulevard. Original plumbing, hardwood floors, plaster walls — we work cleanly around all of it. Cast iron drains, clay laterals, and root issues common to North Indianapolis. Back to all service areas or north Indianapolis pre-war home specialists.
Meridian-Kessler homes were built when Indianapolis's wealthy north side was a streetcar suburb. The materials are excellent — hand-laid hardwood floors, plaster-and-lath walls, original copper plumbing, custom cabinetry. Drain work in these homes requires a different approach than a 1990s subdivision.
Boot covers and drop cloths are not optional — we set up like we're working in a museum. Tools laid on padded mats, never on original hardwood or marble. Cast iron cleanouts often need to be located behind original cabinetry; we work with what's accessible without destroying finish carpentry.
Original cast iron drains in M-K are typically 90-100+ years old. Most are heavily scaled internally but structurally sound. Hydro jetting strips scale back to bare metal — restoring full flow without replacing pipe. Replacement is rarely the right answer unless camera confirms structural failure.
Clay lateral root work is the most common M-K call. Silver maple, oak, and sycamore on Meridian, Pennsylvania, College, and the cross streets create perfect root-intrusion conditions. Annual maintenance is typical; trenchless lining (CIPP) is often the long-term solution for chronic-intrusion homes.

Call (463) 331-0700No. Drop cloths cover the floor in any work area. The cable machine sits on a padded mat, never directly on hardwood or marble. Boot covers come on at the door. We treat M-K homes the way we'd want our own homes treated.
Almost always jet first. 90-100 year old cast iron is usually scaled but structurally sound — hydro jetting strips the scale and restores full flow at a fraction of replacement cost. Camera scope tells us whether the pipe is sound. Replacement only when the camera confirms actual structural failure.
Internal drain work doesn't trigger Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission review. External excavation visible from the street does, in some M-K sub-districts — we coordinate with HPC for the paperwork. Trenchless lining (CIPP) is fully HPC-compliant since nothing is visible from the street.
Yes. Many M-K homes still have original 1920s-1930s claw-foot tubs, pedestal sinks, and pull-chain toilets. We work around these — never force fittings, never replace antique components without owner sign-off, and recommend specialist restoration plumbers if a fixture needs work beyond drain clearing.
