Irvington's Historic District is one of Indianapolis's most beautiful neighborhoods — and from a drain-service standpoint, ground zero for tree root intrusion. Clay tile sewer laterals from the 1880s-1930s plus a century of mature maples and oaks means we run root removal calls in 46219 every single week. We do them right: cut, jet, then foaming herbicide. Back to all service areas or east Indianapolis sewer specialists.
Three factors converge in Irvington to make tree root intrusion the dominant call type. First — clay tile laterals. Most Irvington homes built before 1940 still have original vitrified clay sewer laterals running from the foundation out to Washington Street's main sewer. Clay tile is durable for a century but its mortared joints loosen and crack.
Second — Irvington's tree canopy is one of the most mature in the metro. Silver maple, willow, sycamore, and oak line every block. Aggressive root systems find the smallest gap in a clay joint and follow the water + nutrients. By the time you notice the slow drain, the line is choked.
Third — the houses are old and the residents stay. Multi-generational Irvington ownership means a lot of homes haven't had any sewer work since the original installation. The annual root removal + foaming herbicide treatment is essentially Irvington maintenance, like changing the furnace filter.
For homes where roots are chronic (twice-yearly clearing or worse), trenchless pipe lining (CIPP) seals every joint and roots can't find re-entry. Lifetime warranty on the liner. Camera scope tells us whether lining or annual treatment makes more sense for your specific lateral.

Call (463) 331-0700Run the numbers. Annual root removal + foaming herbicide is $400-$850/year. Trenchless CIPP lining is a one-time $4,500-$8,500 with lifetime warranty. Math typically favors lining after year 6-8 of annual treatments. We'll camera-scope first and give you the honest cost comparison.
No. Trenchless pipe lining doesn't disturb the tree's root system at all — it inserts a new liner into the existing pipe via existing access points. Your maple, oak, or sycamore stays. Just the inside of the pipe gets a new sealed surface that roots can't penetrate.
Internal drain work — no restrictions. External work (trench excavation visible from the street, exterior cleanout caps) may require Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission review for homes in the designated historic district. We've done this paperwork before; it adds a step but isn't a barrier. Trenchless work is fine without HPC sign-off.
Average 35-50 minutes from our central staging. Faster for the western portion of Irvington (near Sherman Drive), slower for eastern areas closer to Cumberland. Emergency calls (sewage backup) get priority dispatch regardless.
